The Fairweather is a settle in the old pub sense: more timber than upholstery. The back is boarded in dark oak to 1,450 mm, high enough to shelter a table from the rest of the bar, and two 40 mm solid oak side boards close the ends so the seat becomes a small compartment.
Upholstery is kept to where it does its job: a seat cushion and a single 450 mm deep back pad set into the boarding at shoulder height. A 60 mm solid cap runs along the top of the back with a slim brass strip beneath it, and each side board carries a plain brass roundel.
Why timber. Boarded backs and solid ends take knocks, spills and decades of leaning far better than fabric, and they can be sanded and refinished rather than replaced. They also look right in a period interior.
Construction. Solid oak frame and side boards, boarded back on a braced frame, upholstered seat on a firm base, wall and floor fixing points concealed.
Options. Length, back height, timber and stain, cushion fabric or leather, with or without roundels.
